Navigating Language Test Requirements for Canadian Immigration
Are you considering immigrating to Canada? If so, you need to be aware of the language test requirements for the various skilled worker immigration programs. In this blog post, we will guide you through the language test requirements for Canadian immigration and help you understand which tests are approved by the Canadian government.
Language Test Requirements for Skilled Worker Immigration Programs
Canada’s federal and provincial skilled worker immigration programs, including the federal Express Entry system and the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), require applicants to complete a language test to demonstrate their language proficiency. Each program has its own test score requirements, which are based on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) system. The validity period for language test scores is two years; if more than two years have passed since you completed a language test, you will need to retake it.
Approved Language Tests for Canadian Immigration
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) approve the following language tests for skilled worker applications:
For English:
- CELPIP General Test
- IELTS General Training
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) — (available from late 2023)
For French:
- TEF Canada: Test d’évaluation de français
- TCF Canada: Test de connaissance du français

CELPIP
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) covers four modules — listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test takes approximately three hours to complete and costs around $300. Results are available within 4–5 days.
IETLS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) also has four modules — listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete and costs around $300. Results are available within 3–5 days for computer-based tests and 13 days for paper-based tests.
TEF
The Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) assesses French comprehension and expression skills in non-native speakers. It is used for Quebec Immigration and is the only French language test accepted for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). The TEF consists of three written sections and two oral sections, with varying time limits. The cost of the TEF depends on the location of the test.
TCF
The Test de Connaissance du français (TCF) is another test used to assess French comprehension and expression skills in non-native speakers. It is also used for Quebec Immigration. The TCF consists of three compulsory sections and two optional sections. The compulsory examinations last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, while the optional examinations last approximately two hours. The cost of the TCF depends on the location of the test.
Language proficiency plays a significant role in the Canadian immigration process, and understanding the language test requirements is crucial for a successful application. By familiarizing yourself with the approved language tests and their formats, such as the CELPIP, IELTS, TEF, and TCF, you can make an informed decision on which test suits your needs best. Remember to choose a test center authorized by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to ensure the results are recognized.
