Fake College Admission Letters Used to Get Canadian Visas

An Indian immigration agent has been sent to jail for three years after he admitted to tricking students from India who wanted to study in Canada. Brijesh Mishra, 37, used fake college acceptance letters to help these students get Canadian visas.

How Mishra Fooled the Students

Canadian officials found that between 2016 and 2020, Mishra gave many students from India phoney letters saying they had been accepted into Canadian colleges and universities. The students were trying to get visas to study in Canada.

Mishra would tell students to “apply” to multiple schools to increase their chances. But the students never actually applied themselves. Mishra simply collected their documents like passports and test scores. Then he would later claim a school accepted them and give them an acceptance letter from his office.

The students would pay Mishra fees for his “services”, often in cash with no receipts. When they arrived in Canada, the students discovered the schools had never admitted them. Mishra sometimes avoided them after being paid.

Mishra Pleads Guilty, Will Be Deported

Mishra pleaded guilty in court to violating Canadian immigration laws by lying and giving false information. He apologized, saying he was sorry and it wouldn’t happen again.

In addition to three years in jail, Mishra will likely be sent back to India after his sentence. He could face more severe charges there, with the highest being the death penalty for human smuggling.

Canadian officials are still trying to find all the victims Mishra and other fraudsters cheated. They have vowed to help legitimate students stay and finish their studies.
